"Jackie Chan. Finally we meet. It was nice knowing you."
— Valmont to Jackie Chan in Bullies

Valmont is a ruthless crime lord in charge of the Dark Hand, an international criminal syndicate based in San Francisco. He is one of Jackie Chan's most competent and long-standing opponents. Valmont serves as the secondary antagonist for the show's first two seasons.

Appearance

Valmont is tall and athletic, he is typically seen wearing a green suit over a black shirt and yellow tie. He has blue eyes, a medium-tan skin tone, and shoulder-length, flaxen blonde hair (which he keeps tied back in a ponytail). He also has a small gold earring. In his appearance in Season 4, his suit was heavily wrinkled and slightly torn, his hair was uncombed, and he also sported a five-o-clock shadow. When underneath the control of Shendu, Valmont is shown wearing a black and dark blue Asian themed qipao wardrobe.

Personality

Valmont is generally intelligent and level-headed. He is arrogant and driven by greed (as shown by his desire to attain Shendu's lost treasure). Valmont operates out of self-interest, almost always being only concerned about his own well-being (as shown by the way he treated the Chan clan after being possessed by Shendu), as well as Tohru (suffered by memory loss) when the two are attacked by giant statues in attempt of trying to steal the golden elephant. He does not hesitate to stoop to dishonorable means to incapacitate an opponent, and will betray his followers or allies if a better opportunity presents itself (such as when he used the Dragon Talisman for himself instead of handing it to Shendu).

Plot

Background

Valmont child

Valmont as a child

Valmont was born in England. Although not much is known about his early life, when he was younger, Valmont was contacted by men who would eventually become his Enforcers. In a skirmish, Valmont was about to shatter the orb that could enable time travel, but accidentally activated it, sending Jade and Jackie to the present while the Enforcers had to go back the long way. Younger Jackie made Valmont faint with a near blow to the face. Jackie then continued his journey while Valmont lay flat on the ground.

Season 1

Valmont joins forces with Shendu to acquire the Twelve Talismans in exchange for the Lost Treasure of Ching Xi Hung. Valmont used a great deal of his organization's resources to retrieve the Talismans from across world, which drained quite a bit of the Dark Hand's finances, though Shendu assured him that his reward would make up for all of his lost assets, ten thousand times over specifically. Upon acquisition of all twelve talismans, however, Shendu chose to double-cross Valmont, negating on their deal by exploiting the technicality that it was not Valmont who brought Shendu the talismans, but rather Jackie Chan. Enraged at Shendu's betrayal, Valmont ordered Tohru to "make this deadbeat pony up" in what ultimately proved to be a futile gesture. After fleeing Shendu, Valmont and his men were then apprehended by Section 13. To escape, Valmont activated a tracer in his cane that contained his electric dagger to break before proceeding to travel to Hong Kong in an attempt to seize the treasure himself beneath Shendu's nose. However, when Shendu was destroyed by Jade Chan, the treasure along with the palace itself crumbled into dust. Upon emerging from the debris, however, Valmont and his men were able to acquire a consolation prize in the form of the Twelve Talismans.

Season 2

With Shendu out of the way, Valmont used his newly-acquired Talismans for financial gain by equipping the enforcers with their power and making them use it to rob banks. However, Valmont shortly became the involuntary host to Shendu's spirit, tasked with freeing the other seven Demon Sorcerers. Neither Shendu nor Valmont were happy with their situation and Valmont was forced to wear a traditional Chinese robe for most of the portal hunt. Unlike the previous season, Valmont was no longer stationed within his skyscraper and he and his enforcers had to operate within the Helms Fish Cannery.

Despite the Dark Hand's efforts, every demon they released was subsequently banished by the Chans, resulting in Bai Tza refusing Shendu's plea to separate him from Valmont's body. Shendu then decided to graft Valmont's body into a new dragon body, turning his skin green and putting a horn on his forehead. When he was about to apply gills in order to survive underwater when Bai Tza planned to have San Francisco sunk to the bottom of the ocean, Valmont had enough and tried touching the Pan'ku Box to exorcise Shendu only to render him unconscious (although this did return Valmont to his original form). He went to the Chans for help, even providing the location of his hideout but they only agreed to help when he provided the whereabouts of Bai Tza (The location of his hideout was later proven useful anyway). Uncle painted a symbol on his Valmont's forehead to keep Shendu bound until he could be properly exorcised. However, the sign was washed away and Shendu woke up. Valmont was eventually finally freed of Shendu when he was banished to the Netherworld when they attempted to open the final portal. He celebrated his liberation from Shendu.

When Shendu rewrote the Book of Ages to put Earth under rule of the demons, he made the Dark Hand his court jesters, but when the Chans and the J-Team corrected history, Valmont and his men were put right again.

Following this, Jackie and the Dark Hand vied to obtain the Cat of Khartoum statue. In the end, Valmont got it, planning to sell it to a shady character named Cardiff Zendo, but got scratched by the statue’s claws in the process, which changed him into a cat-like creature with the habits and abilities of a feline. Valmont planned to use these abilities to further his crimes, planning to create an army of cat human hybrids like himself, but the cat-like instincts he developed in his transformation confounded this aim.

In the end, Jackie realized the statue was too dangerous for a museum and destroyed it, reverting Valmont (and Jade, who had also gotten scratched and transformed) back to human form when they were exposed to the antidote inside the statue.

Season 3

The Dark Hand had lost most of its assets, thanks to Shendu and his hunt for the Demon portals. Valmont had his Enforcers raid Section 13 for the Talismans to continue their crimes, now promising to treat them as partners rather than minions. However, the Talismans were destroyed by Chan in an encounter with the Enforcers and Daolon Wong, who then transformed the Enforcers into his new Dark Warriors — forcing Valmont to go solo. During a robbery that brought him to a dumpster, he runs into Wong, spilling his supplies for the horse talisman location spell. Valmont demands his men back, threatening him with his bigger size. Wong then simply turned Valmont into a child. With no choices left, Valmont goes to the Chans only to learn that they were looking for the Horse Talisman power in England. He sneaks aboard their plane and when discovered, demands he’d be turned back to normal. When refused, he messes around in the hotel room before running off to find the horse. He disguises himself as a jockey and takes the horse, only to find that it only healed his paper cut. When they return to America, Uncle turns him back into an adult, but once he steps off the plane, he is arrested by Section 13 agents.

As part of a plan to become rich again (and with the loss of Finn, Chow, and Ratso), Valmont targeted Tohru and gave him an amnesia potion so he wouldn’t remember he no longer works for the Dark Hand. He then goes to Sri Lanka to steal a golden elephant-shaped statue, but the Chans stop him (and make Tohru realize who his friends are in the process). In the end, Valmont gets a dose of his own medicine and is compelled by Jade to dance a Swan Lake ballet.

Eventually, Valmont got out of jail. With his fortune and criminal empire in ruins, he managed to live a low life in a cubicle one-room apartment, living on stolen money; he caught wind of the Chans’ quest for the Oni Masks, and managed to purchase one online. His username was “Filthyrich1” — even though he wasn’t “rich, just filthy” (in Jade’s words).

He intended to wear the mask to summon a Shadowkhan army and regain his lost riches through bank-robbing. But the mask was split in half, and Valmont got the left. Thus, Valmont’s Shadowkhan were only half and his half of the mask still had its personality and only desired destruction, not riches (much to Valmont’s dismay). Later, however, he rips it off using a mask removal potion with Jade’s help as he can’t control it. He tosses it aside for a box of diamonds, but gets inadvertently caught in a delivery postage machine, wrapped up and shipped to Mexico instead.

Season 5

Valmont’s final appearances were brief non-speaking cameos, including applying for a job as Drago’s henchman, though he was immediately turned down. In The Powers That Be (Part 2), he is last seen as the driver of a bus the J-Team helps rescue from falling off a bridge. Jackie recognizes him, saying his name briefly, before Valmont tries to hide his face and runs off.

Powers and Abilities

MainValmon

Arguably, Valmont’s greatest skill is his intelligence. He is a skillful criminal strategist and has been labeled by others as a “crime genius”. (He was even shown to be a master of instigation as a child.)

He is also a martial arts fighter who is able to hold his own against (and even get the better of) Jackie in their personal confrontations. Even as a child, Valmont was still capable of swiftly dispatching a jockey using his fighting skills in order to steal his clothing.

As the leader of an international crime syndicate, Valmont also possesses considerable amounts of resources which he uses to aid in accomplishing his goals, although these funds were nearly completely depleted when he was under the control of Shendu.

Relationships

The Chan Family

Valmont detests the Chan family to almost no bounds throughout the course of the show. Most of his hatred is directly towards Jackie due to him thwarting his plans in almost every occasion when it comes for the search of the talismans, as well as always happening to be at the same location wherever he sends his enforcers to. However, he will resort to seeking them for aid if it ever comes to his desperation such as releasing Shendu from his body or reverting him back to his adult self when turned into a child by Daolong Wong.

Captain Black

As a master of a crime syndicate, Valmont is a high wanted criminal towards Section 13, and it is obvious to Valmont that he'll will do what he can to avoid Captain Black from bringing him to justice.

Shendu

Valmont allied himself with Shendu in hopes of being rewarded the lost treasure after obtaining all 12 talismans for him. The two weren't always on good terms but allied together hoping to reach their goals. They begin to resenting each other after Valmont's crime syndicate prove to be incompetent towards Shendu, as well as the latter causing it to lose all its resources in search of the demon portals. The situation is also reverse when Shendu fails to perform his own task (using the sheep talisman and possessing Jade to find Section 13), which results in Valmont to berating Shendu's attempt just as much to his own. After being refused to offer Valmont the treasure and explained that it was Jackie who "provided" all his talismans for him, Valmont was finally fed up with the dragon and proceeded to take matters to his own hands.

Daolong Wong

Valmont detested the dark chi wizard after Wong stole his Enforcers from him and transformed them into Dark Chi Warriors. When the two happened to bump into each other after Valmont robbed a common bank alone, he demanded Wong to return his enforcers by using his height as the advantage he has over him, which caused Wong to turn his childish nature to the state he would soon be in.

Tohru

Tohru was Valmont's personal right-hand man due to his massive size and incredible strength. Because of Tohru's loyalty, he would follow Valmont's orders absolute without questioning, even if it meant harming his victims lethally. After many failures, Valmont began to feel displease towards Tohru, and hired Hak Foo, a master martial artist who's more agile, to lead future missions (and possibly demote Tohru into a lower enforcer). He even forced Tohru to fight a powerful demon like Shendu with only his bare strength despite the odds, which would soon result Tohru to turn over to the Chans. When temporarily working with Jackie to hunt down Bai Tza, Valmont still held hope believing Tohru would return to his previous ways by telling Jackie to watch his back against him, and at one point used a potion to revert Tohru back to his old self after losing his enforcers to Daolong Wong.

Enforcers

The enforcers (Finn, Chow, and Ratso) are Valmont's top men in his syndicate, who provide them with high-tech equipment to perform the criminal activities for him. Over the course of the show, Valmont begins to grow annoyed of their failures and soon deems them as incompetent. He's taken by surprise when they actually perform their duties but does not care about the details as long as they present to him with what he seeks. Despite his failure of allies, Valmont still employs them due to the Dark Hand's status of losing many of their resources (mostly due to Shendu), and even went to such lengths to save his enforcers when they were forced to become Daolong Wong's warriors. This pleased them so much to hear that Valmont actually cares about them (in Valmont's case: he just needed men to do his bidding), and they even stated to Wong that he at least bothered to learn his enforcers actual names.

Hak Foo

Not much was actually shown between Hak Foo and Valmont besides the fact that he was a freelance hired on, and taking Tohru's place as their lieutenant. Before being able to perform any criminal activities with him, Valmont became possessed by Shendu which forced Hak Foo to hunt for the demon portals instead, and later dismissed himself after Shendu was sealed away in his own door. Despite not fully employed under Valmont, Hak Foo was still considered an enforcer due to always getting caught up with Finn, Chow, and Ratso when they're forced to employ under a new leader (minus Draco).

Trivia

  • Valmont shares many similarities with various antagonists featured in different Jackie Chan's media such as movies, video games and comics.
    • Valmont is remarkably similar to Snakehead, the main antagonist of Jackie Chan's 2003 film The Medallion. Both characters are portrayed by the late Julian Sands, both are power-hungry crime lords proficient in martial arts and both fight Jackie Chan's character for a magical artifact that split in two with one piece granting strength and the other immortality.
    • Valmont is also similar to Dante, the final boss and main antagonist of the 2000 video game Jackie Chan Stuntmaster, as both are crime lords proficient in martial arts who managed to capture a member of Jackie Chan's family.
  • He is the only main antagonist who does not possess magic or supernatural powers. However, objects with magical properties (namely the Dragon Talisman, the Cat of Khartoum and Kuro's Oni Mask) have endowed Valmont with such powers at various points in the series.
  • He is one of the two main antagonists (the other being Shendu) to appear in all five seasons. However, he did not have a role in Season 5 and only appeared in two silent cameos.
  • He is the only main antagonist who is not of Asian origins.
  • Despite being one of the show's primary antagonists, Valmont has teamed up with Jackie a total of three times, albeit only because it was in his own interest.
