"Ancient legend speaks of twelve talismans, one for each animal of the Chinese zodiac, each possessing a different magic."
Uncle revealing the legend of the Talismans to Jackie Chan and Jade Chan.[1]

The Talismans are a legendary set of twelve magical charms represented by the animals of the Chinese zodiac. Each Talisman possesses its own magic that grants its bearer a different power. They were originally created nine-hundred years ago when Lo Pei cast a powerful chi spell to defeat Shendu, extracting his powers and sealing them within twelve stone vessels while imprisoning the demon himself in the form of a stone statue. Reuniting all twelve with Shendu's statue form was the key to breaking him free. As such, Lo Pei resolved to scatter the Talismans to the four corners of the globe to ensure that "the ultimate evil" could never again rise to power. Centuries later, the hunt to retrieve them would culminate in Shendu's resurgence.

History[]

Ancient times[]

Origin[]

Long before the Talismans themselves were created, their twelve magical powers each belonged to the legendary ancestors of the Noble Animals, the original twelve members of the Chinese zodiac.[2] Accordingly, each Talisman is depicted with an image of its rightful animal owner. At an unspecified point in history, all twelve of these abilities were somehow seized by Shendu, the Demon Sorcerer of Fire, who used their combined power to conquer China and rule over its people.

The Talismans are created.

Nine-hundred years before the turn of the third millennium, Shendu was finally overthrown at the hands of his own subjects. The Demon Sorcerer was ultimately defeated by Lo Pei, a Sacred Warrior of the Ling Dynasty, who cast a powerful chi spell in the arcane practice of Scroll Magic, extracting his powers and sealing them within twelve stone vessels, the Talismans, while imprisoning the demon himself in the form of a stone statue. Reuniting all twelve with Shendu's statue form was the key to breaking him free. As such, Lo Pei resolved to scatter the Talismans to the four corners of the globe to ensure that "the ultimate evil" could never again rise to power.[3] Vowing revenge, Shendu declared that he would eventually return and wreak his vengeance on the descendants of those who rebelled against him.[4]

Modern times[]

Discovery[]

After nine centuries of imprisonment, Shendu succeeded in forging an alliance with Valmont, a ruthless crime lord and leader of the criminal syndicate known as the Dark Hand. In exchange for the legendary Lost Treasure of Ching Xi Hung, Shendu enlisted the Dark Hand to recover all twelve Talismans. When the first Talisman was unexpectedly unearthed by Jackie Chan, however, Captain Black of the secret government agency Section 13 recruited Jackie to join their own search, relying on his archaeological expertise and martial arts skill to locate the Talismans before they could fall into Valmont’s hands. Initially reluctant, Jackie ultimately accepted at the urging of his uncle and niece, committing himself to the struggle against the Dark Hand in the ensuing race to secure the Talismans.

With the aid of Uncle, Jade, Captain Black, and Section 13, Jackie embarked on a globe-spanning quest to track down the remaining scattered Talismans. Valmont, meanwhile, relied on his enforcersFinn, Ratso, and Chow, led by Tohru—to pursue the artifacts, aided by a magical Talisman-locating device granted by Shendu and reinforced by his own army of Shadowkhan. Despite this opposition, Jackie ultimately succeeded in securing ten of the twelve missing Talismans, gradually uncovering their magical nature and each of their powers in the process. These Talismans were secured in a high-security vault within Section 13's underground facility, while the remaining two were ultimately claimed by Valmont and brought to Shendu at the Dark Hand's headquarters.

Lambasting the Dark Hand for their repeated failures, Shendu emphasized the urgent need to regain his full power before the stroke of Chinese New Year, when his long-foretold revenge was destined to be fulfilled. In a last-ditch effort to obtain the Talismans still held by Section 13, Valmont ordered his enforcers to abduct Jackie and force him to reveal the location of the agency's vault. After launching an attack on his uncle's shop, the Dark Hand succeeded in capturing Jackie and delivering him to their leader. Unbeknownst to them, Jackie's spiritual balance had been disrupted by the power of the twelfth and final Talisman, splitting his yin and yang into two separate beings. Realizing that his men had seized the darker half, Valmont appealed to this side's greed and ambition with an offer of immense wealth in exchange for the Talismans stored at Section 13. Deprived of his light half's restraint and moral clarity, Jackie's dark half accepted the bargain and willingly surrendered the Talismans to the Dark Hand. Reunited at last with all twelve of his Talismans, Shendu was able to shatter his stone imprisonment and rise in his true dragon form, much to the horror of Jackie and Jade.

Talisman showdown[]

In the wake of his resurgence, Shendu returned to the site of his former palace near Hong Kong, intending to resurrect an army of dragon minions and exact revenge on the descendants of his rebellious subjects. Joining forces with Jackie, Tohru aided Uncle in devising a method to defeat Shendu. When the Chans arrived at the restored palace, Uncle equipped Jackie with a magical balm capable of allowing him to extract the Talismans from Shendu's otherwise impenetrable hide. Rather than having to extract all twelve, Uncle inferred that simply removing the Rat Talisman alone would revert Shendu to his statue form. During the ensuing battle, Jackie systematically tore several Talismans from Shendu before finally seizing the Rat, causing the Demon Sorcerer to petrify once more. Having also lost the Dog Talisman amid the struggle, Shendu was left completely defenseless, allowing Jade to annihilate his now-terminable statue form with the Dragon Talisman and physically vanquish him. As Shendu's Palace began to collapse, Jackie and Jade were forced to abandon the Talismans in order to escape with their lives, unknowingly leaving them behind to be reclaimed by the surviving members of the Dark Hand.

Reclaiming the Talismans[]

All twelve Talismans are reclaimed by the J-Team.

All twelve Talismans are reclaimed by the J-Team.

With all twelve in their possession, the Dark Hand initially planned to use the Talismans to carry out a series of high‑profile crimes. Their ambitions were abruptly interrupted, however, by the untimely return of Shendu, who had emerged from the Netherworld as a disembodied spirit after being charged by his seven demon siblings with locating and opening their respective portals. Requiring a physical vessel, Shendu possessed Valmont and assumed direct control of the Dark Hand. Once again coerced into serving the Demon Sorcerer, Valmont's enforcers offered to relinquish the Talismans to Shendu. However, as they were of no use to him in his disembodied state, Shendu permitted the Dark Hand to retain possession of them for the duration of their new quest. After travelling to Tibet in search of the Pan'ku Box, Shendu and the Dark Hand were confronted by the newly formed J‑Team, an elite group of fighters led by Jackie Chan. In the ensuing clash, Jackie and his allies succeeded in defeating the Dark Hand and, at the cost of allowing Shendu to escape with the Pan'ku Box, reclaimed all twelve Talismans from his enforcers.

Having finally reclaimed all twelve, Jackie secured the Talismans in the vault at Section 13. Meanwhile, Shendu and the Dark Hand pressed on with their objective of releasing the Demon Sorcerers by locating and unlocking each of their portals with the Pan'ku Box. With the J‑Team's focus now diverted to the escalating demon threat, the Talismans themselves were, in Uncle's words, "not important", though Jackie and his allies continued to draw upon their power when necessary—several Talismans played key roles at a number of crucial moments during the campaign to seal the portals.

Demon World[]

When Jackie and his allies sealed the eighth and final portal, banishing each of the Demon Sorcerers—including Shendu himself—his siblings offered him one last chance to secure their release. In a desperate bid to escape further persecution, Shendu turned to the Book of Ages, an ancient tome that records the course of history, and exploited it to rewrite reality itself. By altering the book's contents, he created an alternate world in which the Demon Sorcerers had never been banished, each ruling over a personal domain; in this rewritten timeline, Shendu continued to govern China and retained possession of all twelve Talismans. During Shendu's manipulation of the Book, however, Jade intervened and, in the struggle, tore out a page—an act that allowed her to retain her memories of the original timeline.

Armed with knowledge of the true history, Jade set out to reassemble the J‑Team and oppose the Demon Sorcerers' reign. After "reminding" Jackie and Uncle of the spell they once used to extract the Talismans from Shendu, the three succeeded in plucking six of the twelve Talismans from his demon shell before setting out to free the remaining members of the J‑Team from captivity. With the team restored, Jade led them to the book's location in Australia, where they confronted Shendu and his siblings in a final battle. While the J‑Team held the Demon Sorcerers at bay, Jade was able to reverse Shendu's alterations to the Book of Ages, restoring the original course of history.

T-Girl[]

When Captain Black's superiors ordered the Talismans removed from Section 13, Uncle proposed the Ben‑Shui Temple in Bhutan as a safer refuge, reasoning that the charms would be best protected from dark forces on sacred ground. While the Chans and Captain Black were transporting the Talismans through the mountains en route the temple, their potent magic drew the attention of Daolon Wong, a powerful Dark Chi Master and adversary of the Chans. Seeking to claim the power for himself, Wong dispatched his Dark Chi WarriorsGan, Ren, and Chui—to ambush the group and seize the relics. Unbeknownst to either side, the Talismans' energies had already been transferred into Jade when Section 13's laser security grid struck the charms inside the vault, imbuing her with all twelve powers. Upon discovering her abilities, Jade adopted the heroic alias "T‑Girl" and began experimenting with the Talisman magic.

After his warriors returned with the now‑inert stones, Wong realized the vessels were powerless and moved to confront the Chans personally. During the ensuing Talisman‑charged battle, he managed to immobilize Jade with a spell and abduct her, preventing her from consciously wielding the powers. Intending to absorb the Talisman magic for himself, Wong performed a ritual to extract the energies from Jade's body. However, Uncle's timely counter spell caused the ritual to backfire, enabling Wong to absorb his own paralysis spell instead. With Wong incapacitated and the Talisman magic seemingly returned to their proper vessels, the Chans returned home after Captain Black informed them that his request to keep the Talismans under Section 13's protection had ultimately been approved.

The Noble Animals[]

Seeking to rebuild the Dark Hand, Valmont ordered his enforcers to infiltrate Section 13 and steal the Talismans. By coincidence, Daolon Wong also chose that night to break into the facility in hopes of claiming the Talismans for himself, resulting in a three‑way clash between the Chans, the Dark Hand, and the Dark Chi Wizard. Unwilling to let either enemy faction escape with the relics, Jackie chose to destroy the Talismans outright, commandeering one of Section 13's mounted laser cannons to blast them into fragments. The stone vessels shattered in a massive surge of energy, seemingly erasing the Talismans for good. In the aftermath, Uncle explained that only the physical vessels had been destroyed and that the magic itself had been released. Without vessels to contain them, the Talisman powers would instead seek out living hosts across the world—specifically the noblest and most worthy descendants of their original animal owners, the Noble Animals.

Realizing they had inadvertently restarted the Talisman hunt, Jackie and his allies set out to locate each of these animals before Daolon Wong could exploit them. With his original warriors imprisoned at the hands of Uncle's magic, Wong enslaved each of Valmont's enforcers and transformed them into his new Dark Chi Warriors, sending them on a new globe-spanning quest to capture the living hosts. In the ensuing race to secure the animals, both Wong and Uncle relied heavily on Talisman locator spells to track each host. Although the Chans successfully managed to secure nine of the twelve Noble Animals, they were unable to stop Daolon Wong from absorbing the Rooster and Pig powers from Eggbert and Mordecai.[5]

The Talismans are recreated.

The Talismans are recreated.

Because no living dragons existed to claim it, the magic of the Dragon Talisman lacked a host and was presumed lost. Daolon Wong nevertheless struck a bargain with the banished spirit of Shendu; in exchange for resurrecting him into a new body, Wong would be granted the Dragon's combustion power. Once restored, however, Shendu immediately betrayed Wong, claiming the Dragon power for himself and then stripping the Dark Chi Wizard of the Pig and Rooster abilities he had stolen. Seeking to reclaim the remaining Talisman powers from the Noble Animals, Shendu mounted a direct assault on Section 13. Unable to stop him from breaching the facility, Jackie and Jade attempted to draw Shendu away by fleeing with the nine captured animals, hoping to buy Uncle enough time to uncover a spell capable of defeating the Demon Sorcerer. Shendu eventually tracked down the animals and extracted each of their inherited powers, regaining the full set of twelve abilities. Before he could unleash his restored might against Jackie and Jade, Uncle arrived armed with the same spell Lo Pei had used centuries earlier, once again transforming Shendu into stone and, in the process, reforging the Talismans themselves. Shendu's new statue form and the recreated Talismans were then secured together in the Section 13 vault for safekeeping.

Final battle with Drago[]

Shendu is reunited with the Talismans for one last time.

When Drago absorbed all eight Demon Chi powers, Jade equipped each member of the J‑Team with a Talisman for the final confrontation against the chi‑mutated Fire Demon. To further even the odds, Uncle released Shendu from his stone prison with a spell, turning the Demon Sorcerer against his treacherous son. As the battle progressed and Drago began to gain the upper hand, Jade instructed the team to toss their Talismans to Shendu, allowing him to reunite with all twelve powers, offering the ultimate advantage against Drago. Although the two Fire Demons proved evenly matched in the ensuing clash, Uncle and Tohru cast a reversal spell on Drago's portal to the Netherworld, dragging both Fire Demons into the rift. With the gateway sealed, Shendu, Drago, and the Talismans were all lost within the Netherworld.

At least 10 years in the future[]

Ultimate fate[]

In the years following the banishment of Shendu and Drago to the Netherworld, the Talismans were eventually recovered and secured once more within the vaults of Section 13. In this future era, Jade Chan ascended to a leadership role within the organization, overseeing its ongoing efforts to monitor and confront powerful supernatural threats such as Drago. At one point, facing the threat of Drago's attempted resurrection of his father through the use of the Dragon Teeth, future Jade journeyed back in time carrying the Dragon Talisman, attempting to prevent the scheme before it could be realized.[6] On another occasion, after pursuing a mysterious Dark Chi Wizard named Iso through a time portal into this near‑future, the younger Jade encountered the Rooster, Ox, Snake, Monkey, and Dragon Talismans safely stored under Section 13's protection—all of which proving crucial in the fight against Iso.[7] However, due to the time‑travel and reality‑altering events that followed, it is unclear whether this particular future remains the definitive outcome of the Talismans' fate, or one of several possible timelines shaped by Jade's interventions.

Physical description[]

Each Talisman bears an image of one of the twelve members of the Chinese zodiac, symbolizing the Noble Animal from which its power originates. The reverse side features engraved inscriptions that describe—or in some depictions, allude to—the Talisman’s respective ability. The charms share a uniform octagonal shape and appear to be carved from smooth grey stone, giving them the appearance of ancient artifacts. In size, each Talisman is comparable to a golf ball, small enough to rest comfortably in the palm of an adult hand.[8] When their powers are activated, the Talismans emit a distinctive inner glow that varies in intensity depending on the nature and strength of the ability being invoked, visually signifying their supernatural energy.

Powers and abilities[]

Each Talisman possesses its own respective magical power (see list), granting its bearer a distinct supernatural ability. Despite their variety, the Talismans share similar magical properties; their powers require minimal conscious effort to activate, operate independently of external conditions, and can be transmitted through indirect contact such as touch or possession. When combined, their abilities can either complement or amplify one another, allowing for interactions that produce new or heightened effects—for example, pairing the Rooster Talisman with the Rabbit Talisman enables supersonic flight.[9] Complete unification of all twelve creates a power of near-limitless destructive and restorative potential. According to Shendu, this fusion of energies is balanced and controlled through the Tiger Talisman, which serves as a spiritual anchor and harmonizes the opposing forces within the set.[10]

Talisman Locators[]

Shendu forged a mystical Talisman Locator from the same stone as his statue form, enabling precise detection of each Talisman's location. Consisting of a torch-like handle with four, dragon-like heads at its top arranged like compass points, the eyes and mouth of the dragon head facing the nearest Talisman would glow bright red, effectively guiding the user to its location.

The application of chi magic enables the casting of specialized locator spells to detect individual Talismans or their powers. Unlike Shendu's Talisman Locator, which could track all twelve simultaneously, each spell targets a specific Talisman and requires its own unique combination of ritual ingredients. Following Jackie Chan's destruction of the Talisman vessels—which released their magic into the Noble Animals—both Uncle and Daolon Wong relied on these spells to locate the power-bearing creatures across the globe.

Trivia[]

  • The Talismans are typically activated by pressing them into the user's palm, though their magic remains active as long as they stay on the bearer's person—for example, when carried in a pocket, worn as a pendant, or even contained inside the body after being swallowed. When Jade unknowingly ingested the Rooster Talisman, she was able to trigger its levitation power simply by leaning her stomach forward.
  • The Talismans can temporarily imbue inanimate objects with their powers through direct contact, but their effects cease the instant that contact is broken.
  • A recurring visual motif in the series is a brief glint of light sweeping across a Talisman's surface, especially at the moment its power is activated.
  • Shendu is intensely possessive of the Talismans, viewing them as extensions of his own essence and considering himself complete only when he has reclaimed all twelve.
  • Jackie, Jade, and Shendu are the only characters shown using every Talisman at least once.
  • When asked which Talisman he would most like to possess, the real-life Jackie Chan replied that he would prefer to have all twelve. Conversely, Jackie Chan's animated counterpart generally dislikes relying on the Talismans and uses them only as a last resort.
  • Jade once remarked that the Dog, Ox, Rabbit, Rooster, Snake, and Dragon Talismans are “the good ones,” regarding them as the most useful of the twelve, while Shendu has stated that the Dragon is his personal favorite.
  • Finn dismisses the Rat, Sheep, and Tiger Talismans as the most “useless” due to their non‑offensive applications, and Jackie has likewise derided the Sheep Talisman in particular as having limited practical value.
  • Dai Gui appears to resent the Talismans and Shendu's reliance on them, cursing "Shendu and his accursed Talismans!" after the Rabbit Talisman offered Tohru an advantage over him in "Demon World (Part 2)".
  • Although the Dog Talisman prevents death and serious injury, it does not eliminate physical pain, whereas the Horse Talisman can remove both wounds and the pain associated with them. This is demonstrated in "The Stronger Evil", when Finn crashes into an overpass and complains that "immortality hurts" after previously determining that healing and immortality together would be redundant.
  • Each Talisman's power appears to reference a familiar trait or saying associated with its animal:
    • Rooster (levitation): Reflects that poultry are birds yet generally incapable of true flight.
    • Ox (super strength): Plays on the great physical strength of cattle.
    • Snake (invisibility): Evokes the way snakes conceal themselves.
    • Rabbit (super speed): Refers to rabbits' quickness.
    • Sheep (astral projection): Echoes "counting sheep" to fall asleep, linking the power to dreams and out‑of‑body states.
    • Rat (animation): Alludes to cartoon depictions of rats carrying off food that appears to move on its own.
    • Dragon (combustion): Reflects the classic image of fire‑breathing dragons.
    • Horse (healing): Draws on the phrase "healthy as a horse."
    • Monkey (transmogrification): Mirrors "monkey see, monkey do", with mimicry expressed as transformation.
    • Dog (immortality): Plays on the idea that dogs age differently than humans.
    • Pig (optical beams): Nods to the expression "in a pig's eye."
    • Tiger (spiritual balance): Evokes black‑and‑white tigers and the duality of the yin‑yang symbol.
  • Only seven Talismans depict the full body of their animal (Rooster, Snake, Sheep, Monkey, Rabbit, Rat, and Dog), while the remaining five (Tiger, Horse, Ox, Dragon, and Pig) show only a head or partial figure.
  • The Tiger Talisman is the only one to depict more than one image of its animal, visually representing its ability to split or balance the user's yin and yang halves despite technically symbolizing a single tiger.
  • The Ox Talisman is the only design that shows its animal looking directly forward, with the Pig Talisman coming closest among the others. On the remaining Talismans, the depicted animals face different directions: the Snake, Dragon, Horse, and Pig look to the left (from the viewer's perspective), while the Rooster, Rabbit, Sheep, Rat, Monkey, and Dog look to the right. The Tiger may also be considered left‑facing if each half is viewed upright.
  • The Talismans are the only magical artifacts to remain active throughout the series beyond their debut season, frequently serving as an ongoing arsenal and toolset for the protagonists, whereas most other major artifacts are destroyed, neutralized, or quietly disappear after their introductory arcs.
