"Enough fanfare! What's for supper?"
— Po Kong upon her release

Po Kong (Pō Kông) is a Demon Sorcerer - specifically the Mountain Demon - and one of Shendu's seven siblings who were trapped in the Netherworld, making her one of the Demon Portals story arc antagonists of Season 2.

Appearance[]

Po Kong resembles a green-skinned gargantuan monster with stubby arms and legs. She is noseless and has big, red lips with long eyelashes and dark hair tied in a bun. Being the Mountain Demon, Po Kong is the largest demon in the show with a bulbous, morbidly obese build and numerous rock fragments located around her body. She is so large that she can hold the likes of Jackie and Hsi Wu in her hands.

Personalty[]

Po Kong's defining traits are her ravenous appetite and obsession with eating. Food is the first and foremost thought on her mind - the first thing she sought from Shendu after he freed her from the Netherworld was "supper", and the very first thing she did when Hsi Wu woke her from her nap was to ask if it was dinnertime, then wonder in response to the news Bai Tza had been re-banished if she'd brought food back to the Netherworld with her. Po Kong admits she is particularly and especially fond of the taste of humans, and often expresses delight at the thought of eating them, practically every time she encounters a member of the Chan Clan. Like the other Demon Sorcerers, Po Kong has no qualms whatsoever against killing a child, mainly desiring to eat them, such as Jade Chan in pursuit of her goal (appetite in her case). Her appetite seems to also help her recognize scents, particularly that of what she desires to eat. In The Eighth Door, despite none of the demons realizing Jade is in the Netherworld with them, she was able to smell her, growing her appetite, however, she dismisses her own smell given no humans could be there. Apart from humans, she was also observed eating giant slugs similar to Shendu's meals in the Book of Ages-altered timeline, though she was somewhat picky with these meals and demanded they be served with salt. Po Kong's appetite is also her downfall, as it often distracts her from the presence of other potential threats besides whatever human she is targeting.

Though Po Kong's appetite-oriented personality makes her seem less ambitious and more easily-appeased than most of her siblings, she is by no means devoid of cruelty. She pressured her slaves in the alternate timeline to mine more salt for her meals under the threat of devouring them all. She seems to be somewhat bullying towards her brother Hsi Wu (who, in turn, is a resentful nuisance towards her), crushing him in her hand and flicking him when he's been about to scratch an itch on her back, seemingly just for the sake of it.

History[]

Background[]

Po Kong is revealed in The Eighth Door to be younger than her brother Tso Lan. In ancient times ("Thousands of years ago", according to Tohru in Relics of Demon Past), Po Kong and her seven siblings terrorized the world, until they were defeated and banished to the Netherworld one-by-one by the Eight Immortals. Po Kong's Demon Portal was located on an island at the mouth of the Sumida River in Tokyo, Japan.

It's indicated by the location of Po Kong's Demon Portal, and her whereabouts in the Book of Ages-altered reality near Mount Fuji, that she ruled over Ancient Japan from what is now Tokyo before being banished.

Season 2[]

Po Kong was the first of the seven demons whose portal was opened. Seconds after her release, Po immediately attempted to devour Jackie who was completely helpless due to her size. However, she was overwhelmed by an army of Jades created by a faulty cloning spell. The Jades managed to knock her down and keep her humongous body suspended long enough for the Chans to banish her using a drum found at the site.

Po Kong later reappeared in the The Eighth Door when her sister Bai Tza was banished back to the Netherworld. Jade, who had been trapped in the Netherworld along with Bai, occupied Po Kong's back when the demon sorcerers discussed how they're going to deal with the portal situation (her back being large enough to hide Jade as she spied on the meeting). While Po Kong, nor her siblings, saw Jade, she believes she smells a human which frightens Jade when Po Kong states desire to eat her if she finds her. However, she dismisses her smell thinking it cannot be possible for a human to be in the Netherworld. When the eighth and final portal was opened, Po Kong squashed her sister Bai into a splash of water and desperately grasped onto two floating rock platforms to propel herself to the portal. Tso Lan then used his gravity powers to toss her aside, remarking "age before beauty", with Xiao Fung being caught in her massive body when he tried to escape as Po Kong flew to the other side.

Po Kong appeared in Demon World (Part 2), where she rules Japan and forces many to work in salt mines for her meals. She attempted to devour them again. However, Tohru was enslaved in her domain, and aided the Chans by banging on a nearby drum to banish her back to the Netherworld.

Season 4[]

Po Kong briefly appears in Deja Vu when Jackie is returned to the events of Jade Times Jade and Po Kong tries eat him, only for Jackie to enter a time portal as he falls into her mouth, to the Mountain Demon's confusion.

Season 5[]

Po Kong's Chi was located in Quebec, within a pair of chopsticks, made from the Immortal drumsticks that banished Po Kong. Tohru accidentally absorbed the Chi when he used the chopsticks to eat a midnight snack of pork fried rice. Drago managed to very briefly absorb the Chi, but it was drained from him along with his own.

Drago later reabsorbed her Chi with the rest of the Demon Chi in The Powers That Be (Part 2).

Powers and Abilities[]

Po Kong is the largest character and demon in the entire series. Her massive bulk nullifies any attacks from a normal human and she can easily devour anyone/anything should she get her hands on it. Po Kong was able to withstand the Dragon Talisman's fire blast without injury, and similarly Tohru could tank several of Drago's fireballs without being phased.

Aside from her physical strength and eating abilities, Po Kong does not possess any other supernatural powers unlike her siblings who all possessed an elemental or supernatural ability. However she still has knowledge of magic.

Weaknesses[]

Her massive size is also a weakness because she can barely move and can easily be hit by a banishing Chi spell.

Trivia[]

  • She is the first Demon Sorcerer to be banished back into the Netherworld, both in the normal timeline and in the Book of Ages alternate reality.
  • She is the only Demon Sorcerer who declares and desire opportunities to eat humans while the rest of her siblings just desire to rule and enslave them.
    • The only person on-screen she came close to eating was Jackie Chan
  • She spent the shortest time in the earthly world out of all the Demon Sorcerers after being freed.
  • Like Hsi Wu, Po Kong never displays a magical ability related to her element, only displaying physical capabilities (her size and strength in her case).
  • Drago doesn't appear to take on any of Po Kong's features or eating habits when he absorbs her chi in The Powers That Be (Part 2), though her chi may account for his growth in size and ability to consume a missile.
