The method for operating the box was not explained until the search for Shendu's portal. The box is oblong, divided into quarters when viewed from its narrow end, and it is also divided into quarters when viewed from the long side. Each of these eights is also split in half in the same plane as the narrow face, and the end of each eighth is marked with one of the trigrams. To find a specific portal, the box is rotated like a Rubik's cube. The rotations correspond to the trigram of the portal to be revealed. An unbroken trigram line corresponds to a 180-degree rotation that turns the box the long way. A broken trigram line corresponds to a 90-degree rotation of both of the breaks in the eighths.

The Pan'ku box is a box that can unlock the eight Demon portals. It was forged of good magic and, as such, cannot be touched by evil entities, lest they suffer burning pain. Only a good or neutral person (e.g. a human) can touch it.

The Pan'ku box was made by the Eight Immortals, who defeated the eight Demon Sorcerers and sent them to the Demon Netherworld. The Pan'ku box became the lock to the portals of the Netherworld, and it was then placed in a temple in Tibet. Thousands of years later, Shendu (as a spirit possessing Valmont's body), managed to take the box by scooping it up with a blanket and storing it in another box. He had the Enforcers find and unlock the demon portals. After seven portals were opened and then permanently sealed by Chi spells, Jade became trapped in the netherworld, so Jackie Chan took the box. Though he, Uncle and Tohru were able to locate the final portal (which belonged to Shendu), Hak Foo stole the box and drove away. It was not seen again, so its fate is unknown.

A correct rotation causes the chosen eighth of the box to open, projecting a map to the site of the door. The box then closes and forms the key to the portal. The box cannot be rotated again until it is brought to the portal's location, at which time it magically conjurs and flies into the keyhole. The box cannot be opened by alternative means; when the Dark Hand tried to use power tools on it, the tools broke without so much as scratching the box.
