"You touch one hair on Jackie's head, you're going to have to answer to me!"
— Jade Chan to Cardiff Zendo in Enter the Cat

Jade Chan (voiced by Stacie Chan) is the deuteragonist of the Jackie Chan Adventures series. She is the preteen niece (actually first cousin once removed) of Jackie Chan.

Appearance

Jade is a young 12-year-old girl who usually wears a white long-sleeved shirt covered by an orange short sleeved hoodie, blue high-water jeans and red sneakers. She is three feet tall, which she is constantly teased and underestimated for. She has growed-out black hair. Her eyes are light brown.

Personality

Jade is adventurous, happy-go-lucky, bold, sharp-witted, arrogant, kind, enthusiastic, impulsive, noble-hearted, stubborn, impatient, brave, flexible and tomboyish. Since she prefers to accompany Jackie on his missions to see him fight, she seldom heeds his advice to remain in safety, consequently getting both her and Jackie into trouble. Just as often, however, her impulsiveness, quick mind and flexible thinking helps save the day in situations where Jackie's moderate thinking and exaggerated caution prove to be a definite hindrance.

Jade's most prominent trait is her desire for adventure. Although Jackie is content with living a normal life with his niece, Jade constantly seeks excitement through several means. These include eavesdropping on Captain Black and getting involved in his Section 13 mission assignments, experimenting with Uncle's own magic without his permission and joining Jackie in battle against their various adversaries. Jade keeps her parents oblivious to her life of adventure so she won't have to be sent back to them. Despite being reckless, Jade is also sharp-witted. She can think outside the box more so than the other members of the J-Team, and her attentiveness allows her to notice useful details more often than Jackie does.

Once Jade sets her mind on something, she inevitably finds a way to get it. If adults attempt to restrict her, she either comes up with loopholes to contradict their demands, or pretends to comply and simply goes through with her intentions anyway. She is bold and seldom afraid to voice her opinion. Despite Jackie's stern mentorship, Jade cares a bit about following orders, practicing manners and obeying the law, the latter of which she isn't afraid to break when it gets in the way of her goals. Furthermore, when Jade executes Shendu in the Season 1 finale by destroying his statue form, she coldly shows no remorse for killing him.

Under the bravado and occasional ego trip, Jade possesses a noble heart and is often prepared to make sacrifices to help her loved ones. After the Dark Hand inject Jackie with venom that will turn him into stone during the hunt for the Talismans in Season 1, Jade takes it upon herself to surrender the Talismans they've accumulated in exchange for the antidote. Later when Drago kidnaps Jackie, Uncle and Captain Black in the first of the two-part Season 5 finale, Jade risks the fate of the entire world by paying the ransom of all eight Demon Chi powers in exchange for their safe return. Jade forms a close brother-sister relationship with Tohru after he reforms from the Dark Hand.

Jade craves acceptance, and is typically left dismayed at being frequently put aside. She often becomes sad when Jackie expresses disappointment in her. Jade deeply values friendship; she quickly befriends a prehistoric creature she names Dwayne as well as the living statue of Sacred Warrior Lo Pei. However, she does not approve of people taking advantage of her friendship, such as with Viper's double cross in Enter the Viper and Seymour's deception in Tale of the Demon Tail.

Jade deeply adores animals, effectively providing her with additional incentive during the hunt for the Noble Animals in Season 3. She quickly bonds with each of the animals, in particular with the Noble Dog who she names Scruffy. Jade cannot stand the thought of animals coming to harm. When Daolon Wong threatens to kill Mickey in Aztec Rat Race, Jade places her own life in danger by refusing to let Wong harm him. After overhearing Karl Nivor expressing his intention to eat Aesop in Shell Game, Jade opts to rescue the tortoise over preventing the Dark Hand from escaping with the Rabbit Talisman. Likewise in The Curse of El Chupacabra, Jade quickly turns on Paco when the latter suggests surrendering the goat herd to the eponymous creature in order to save their own lives.

Despite her youthful enthusiasm, she is at times seen to show maturity beyond her age, which could be derived from her having lived several lifetimes as the Ben-Shui Order's Chosen One.

History

Background

Jade Chan is the niece (actually first cousin once removed, since she is the daughter of his first cousin) of Jackie Chan. She was born and raised in Hong Kong. Due to her lack of discipline and poor behavior in school, however, Jade was sent by her mother and father to live in San Francisco with her uncle Jackie. Jade's parents believed that Jackie would be a suitable role model for their daughter.

Season 1

Jade Chan After Arriving In America

Jade after first arriving in America

Upon arriving in the United States, Jade was introduced to Jackie by their mutual (yet unspecified) relative Uncle in his antique shop in Chinatown. Jade was anything but enthusiastic, however, and initially refused to speak to Jackie, leading him to suspect that she did not understand English. After three sinister men entered the store to obtain a shield Jackie had recently recovered from an archaeological expedition in Bavaria, Jade was impressed at her uncle's ability to defend the store after he refused to hand over the shield. When Jackie subsequently pursued the men to a local playground, Jade followed suit and watched the resulting confrontation, witnessing her uncle's masterful display of martial arts to her astonishment. Immediately after driving his aggressors away, however, another individual approached Jackie from behind before sedating him with a toxin and loading him into a van.

Jade managed to track Jackie's abductors to a secluded alleyway leading into a secret underground facility. Unbeknown to Jade, however, her uncle had been summoned by his old friend Augustus Black of Section 13, who sought to enlist Jackie's expertise as an archaeologist against the Dark Hand, a criminal syndicate headed by the crime lord Valmont. Before Jackie could accept Captain Black's offer, however, Jade proceeded to 'rescue' her uncle after infiltrating the facility on a commandeered motor scooter. Amidst the ensuing chaos, Jade revealed herself to be fluent in English. After explaining to Jade that the agents of Section 13 were on their side, Jackie received a phone call from Uncle. Upon studying the shield Jackie recovered from Bavaria, Uncle determined that the shield's inscriptions contained magical incantations whilst inferring that the shield itself was of no importance. Before Uncle could state any further, however, Tohru (under Valmont's orders) made his way into the store and abducted him, demanding the shield from Jackie in exchange for Uncle's safety.

With Jade's help, Jackie successfully discovered Uncle's hiding place for the shield and met Tohru atop a skyscraper downtown to exchange the shield for Uncle's safe return. Apprehensive about surrendering the shield to the Dark Hand, Jackie managed to distract Tohru long enough for Jade to whisk Uncle to safety, leading him down the stairwell to the front of the building. When the Shadowkhan arrived to Tohru's aid, a chase ensued until Jackie tossed the shield down to Jade and Uncle. Before they could both escape with it, however, Tohru intercepted them and seized the shield. After Jackie regrouped with Jade and Uncle at the front of the building, the latter was finally able to explain that the magic he spoke of resided not within the shield but rather the talisman embedded into the center of the shield. At this point, Jade is revealed to have had the talisman in her pocket all along, having possessed the foresight to remove it from the shield before surrendering it to Tohru. Uncle subsequently inferred that there were eleven more talismans in existence upon drawing attention to the sign of the rooster etched onto the face of the talisman. After Captain Black suggested that the Dark Hand would be on the hunt for the remaining talismans, Jackie (at Jade's behest) finally accepted his offer to join Section 13.

Powers and Abilities

Jade's primary attributes are her intelligence, attentiveness and streetsmarts. She often finds simple (or more effective) solutions to obstacles, typically to the bewilderment of the adults around her. Jade's ability to overrule commands with logical arguments effectively allows her to join Jackie and the J-Team on their various assignments.

As a student of Jackie, Jade is trained in the martial arts (specifically kung fu, which she dubs the "ancient art of butt-whoop"). Although her training is primary intended to exercise her discipline and self-control, Jade is no less skillful at fighting. While her stature and lack of physical strength often prove to be a disadvantage against adult opponents, she is quite capable of holding her own in a fight. Her preferred form of attack is a flying kick, though its effectiveness tends to vary. She has knocked out fully grown men on several occasions. At the beginning of Bullies, Jade easily bests school bully Maynard Munson in a fight with a single kick, despite his much larger and heavier size. Likewise at the beginning of And He Does His Own Stunts, Jade swiftly beats Agent Mickey of Section 13 in a training exercise with ease after the latter had proven too strong for Jackie to best.

For a novice, Jade is remarkably proficient in creating potions and casting chi spells, demonstrating on several occasions that (even without the supervision of Uncle and Tohru) she is capable of performing powerful chi magic.

Jade is also known for her skill at solving puzzles; she was able to solve the Pan'ku Box without even looking at it. Additionally, she has an established reputation for cracking the Section 13 vault's state of the art security systems.

As the Chosen One of the Ben-Shui Order, Jade possesses latent mystical powers, although the full extent of these powers remains unknown.

Relationships

Jackie Chan

Jade and Jackie hold a close relationship throughout the show and care about the others safety immensely. However, this does not mean they conform to each others wishes for the other. This is reflected in the ages of the both of them, due to Jade's young age Jackie refuses to let Jade come on any expeditions that can include danger. This is much to Jade's dismay who always wishes to accompany Jackie on his adventures, who always refuses and comes along anyhow. This is much to the annoyance of Jackie, although as the series developed he has since built tolerance to this after this happens consistently.

Despite the dangers of the talismans to the world, Jade in The Rock shows that she prioritizes saving Jackie over giving the talismans to the Dark Hand.

Things got shaky in Deja Vu as Jackie believed Jade would often hold them back. Thinking it'd be for the best for all of them, when sent back in time to when Jade first arrived, he was going to send her back home. However, in a brief moment of recollecting all the memories of when she saved them Jackie ultimately changed his mind, much to the relief of Jade, who was watching.

Uncle

While Jade holds family ties with Uncle they are not as close as Jackie and her. Due to Uncle's habits and stubbornness she does not like staying at Uncles place as she regards it as boring; preferring Section 13. They can often sometimes be annoyed by each others antics with Uncle's bittering, and Jade's immaturity often coming into clutches with each other. This is especially shown in Mirror, Mirror where Jade prefers listening to music over Uncle talk about the Chan ancestry, with one of Uncles fears being if no one can hear him; with Jades being that of a stubborn mule as Uncle claims. Despite this, she is one of the few close to Uncle that is exempted from his infamous two fingered strike to the head, which is most likely because of her age.

Tohru

Her and Tohru are close. Despite not being in their bloodline, Jades seems to consider Tohru as part of the Chan family in It's All in the Game. However initially in Season 1, they were antagonistic towards each other due to her being an obstacle in the way of the Talisman hunt for the Dark Hand. He mostly exempted himself from using violent force against Jade despite this, except for one occasion where the Rooster Talisman was in her stomach; he preferred to use violent means to do so.

From Season 2 onward, her relationship with Tohru seems to be more that of siblings, as Tohru is often told by Jackie to take care of her while he is away, with multiple occasions of Tohru conceding to Jade's demands. Jade has shown to care immensely for Tohru as when she believed she had lost Tohru to Valmont in Tohru Who, she began to weep. Or another occasion she seemed to be somewhat distraught after Tohru apparently died from rubble in The Powers That Be Part 2. Jade also seems to trust Tohru as in the Glove Story despite there seemingly being evidence for Tohru going back to being a criminal, Jade refused to believe it.

It can even get more complex than just older to young sibling, as Jade's charismatic motivation is no exemption with Tohru. As such she was his sumo mentor in Re-Enter the J-Team which helped him to gain confidence to defeat someone much larger than he is. She also attempted to help him get over his fear of the Oni in The Masks of the Shadowkhan. In Weight and See, this is seen again as Jade puts him under a strict diet to better himself, with Jade being the clear dominant leader in this aspect.

Unlike Uncle and Jackie, Tohru is far more tolerant to Jades antics and occasionally even finds them amusing.

El Toro Fuerte

Jade admires El Toro Fuerte as a great fighter and good accompanying friend. El Toro mostly sees Jade as Jackie's over ambitious but interesting kid. In his debut she mostly disregarded him due to seeing wrestling as fake, which was further exemplified upon the reveal that he used the talisman to increase his strength. But after El Toro helped Jade save Jackie and quarrel with Toro, her attitude towards him changed.

In the The J-Team episode, Jade chooses him alongside Viper to be a worthy member of her team, which shows she acknowledges his great skill.

However a typical gag is that despite her belief that El Toro is a great fighter, he is always second or coming short of her idol, Jackie Chan, something that El Toro mostly just sees as child banter and not something to take seriously, as does Jackie.

Paco

Jade and Paco typically have arguments over their respective idols; Jackie and El Toro, something they constantly are bitter about.

Although they may make small talk in arguments they do not hold any resentment towards each other, and mostly see each other as friends. However despite Jade not being mature, she is shown to be the far more clever in comparison to him. An example was in J-Tots where she takes the initiative while Paco mainly remains an affirmative intake to whatever she says.

Their maturity is clearly shown to contrast in the second part of The Powers That Be and Fright Fight Night, where she clearly refers to him as a kid when he naively uses the Sheep Talisman without knowing what it does. While in Fright Fight Night noticing Paco's shattering confidence she tries to not put him down, similarly to how Jackie and El Toro interact with him in the same scene while he remains oblivious to it.

Her peak respect for Paco is in Fright Fight Night, where he is able to overcome the willpower of the Oni masks possession. After he did so, she praised and put him as the spotlight hero of the night.

Viper

Jade sees Viper as an aunt like figure; this is especially in contrast to Jackie's more masculine role model influence and different personalities. Viper seems to reciprocate this by being this role model to her.

In her debut she initially kept this very same attitude towards Viper but since Viper was a thief and hard time criminal she did not care about influencing her until Jade had possession of the Pink Puma which she was seeking. After Viper juked Jade and Jackie on their deal and took both the Talisman and Pink Puma, she felt bitter and managed to take back the Pink Puma from her by stealthily using her own tricks.

In the J-Team she seeks her out despite her previous betterment. It is likely Jade learned of her abandoning her criminal ways and hence let her join the J-Team due to her immense skills. In episodes such as Origami she seems to have full trust in Viper in contrast to Jackie who has mixed feelings about her.

Jade has also expressed and implied she doesn't just see but wants Viper as an aunt. As expressed in her debut, she wished for Jackie to date her cause she'd be "such a cool aunt." In Origami Jade told Viper that Jackie liked her and convinced her to kiss him. During J-Team Xmas she purposely puts them under a mistletoe.

Shen

Shen is Jade's father. He doesn't approve of Jade's behavior and her performance in school. He thought his cousin Jackie would be a role model for Jade to better herself. He's so pleased on how well she's doing, he decided to let her stay with Jackie more. It's unknown how close Jade's relationship is with him since she prefers to stay with Jackie.

Jade's mom

She is Jade's mother. She doesn't approve of Jade's behavior and her performance in school. As the series goes on, she's very pleased how Jade did under her cousin-in-law's supervision that she let Jade stay with him more. It's unknown how close Jade's relationship is with her since she prefers to stay with Jackie.

Valmont

Valmont and Jade do not really have any strong dynamic other than their opposing parties. Valmont for his time in crime mostly saw her as an annoyance much like the other Dark hand members. Many of their interactions are dry. Even episodes where they interact the most such as Little Valmont, Big Jade mostly are just passive aggressive comments Valmont gives to Jade. As such their dynamic usually is just based on the situation.

Shendu

As he does with all humans, Shendu despises Jade but does not considering her a big enemy, despite her being the second or even strongest contribution to Shendu's defeats, as he regards her and Paco as pests. Shendu's hate is targeted more towards Jackie. Despite Jade being the reason he lost in Demon World (Part 2), before he is banished he shouts that he'll have his revenge at Jackie Chan. This shows that he disregards Jade completely.

Jade's attitude towards Shendu is more-so basic, regarding him as a hot headed evil dragon and nothing more.

Hsi Wu

Out of all the Demon Sorcerers, Jade has the most attachment to Hsi Wu. This is due to Hsi Wu's tail being held hostage by the Chans, which meant that he needed to seek out and manipulate one of the Chans to give him access to the tail. Jade being young meant she easy target for him. He transformed into a kid Jade's age under the alias "Seymour Jahoositz" gaining her trust, defending her in front of Drew and the school, and most importantly giving her a friend to express her crazy life stories to. It is implied and confirmed later in Tohru Who that she had developed a crush on him from this, but was worried about him rejecting her at the school dance. Jade, in turn, also gave him one half of the Ying-Yang like medallion, while she kept the other.

However once Hsi Wu got the tail he revealed his identity and betrayed her. Feeling spiteful and to help the Chans she used the talismans to quarrel with him over his tail, which ended in sending him back.

In the Eighth Door this is subtly shown. When Jade is trapped in Demon world, only one can go through the portal back to the overworld. With the Demons quarreling against each other, Hsi Wu seems to be the only one going through the portal. But it is revealed Jade has already arrived near the portal. Telling him that only one can go through, she blows him a kiss to mock him as she goes through the portal.

Daolon Wong

Jade sees Daolon Wong as a freaky "Anti Uncle" due to his magical abilities similar to Uncle. Daolon Wong on the other hand, due to his stance on mortals, merely refers to Jade as "the child" or "the girl."

Daolon Wong sees her as an annoyance. However, in contrast to the other human Dark Hand members, he treats her similarly to how demons deal with Jade, which is him attempting to eliminate her without hesitation due to having no moral empathy. He has many times attempted to strike her with his magical blast to harm her; such as Powers Unleashed where he attempted to strike her when she was playing with her dog.

Tarakudo

Due to Jade's former role as Queen of the Shadowkhan, Tarakudo was more lenient to letting her come back to the Darkness, and believed her young age is why she didn't.

However as the Chans kept thwarting his plans, he soon had no problem with killing Jade. He was going to let Scruffy, possessed by the Oni mask, kill her, with implications that he would've let Paco with the Oni mask do the same despite taunting her to come back to the darkness in the same scene.

Drago

Unlike Shendu, Drago does not disregard Jade at all which is most likely due to his rivalry with Jades future self. In Relics of Demon Past when Drago has the opportunity to kill Jade he says "Hello pay back" which seems to suggest that Drago holds Jade responsible for his defeat in J2: Rise of the Dragons.

In terms of antics they both try to get under the others skin with Drago taking Jade's childish antics in a playful manner with his words, but then striking out for a deadly blow to Jade. Meanwhile, Jade often taunts Drago for his appearance and attitude to get under his skin. This seems to bother Drago as when he is busy chasing a Panda with the Moon Demon Chi, she taunts him, and before Drago takes off after the Panda he announces to Jade that he'll be back for her. This shows that he holds a large amount of hatred for her.

Drago also does not disregard Jade as a threat. During Drago's assault on the Chans in Weight and See, despite Uncle and Jackie being still in his range Drago attempts to viciously attack Jade and eliminate her first. However, despite this he regards Jade as the weak link due to her emotions. This is seen when he kidnapped Captain Black, Uncle, and Jackie as a way to coerce her into giving all the demon chi.

Jimmy

Weakness

Although Jade is very intelligent, her impulsiveness tends to get both her and Jackie into a lot of trouble. She loses her temper if someone calls her "shrimp".

Trivia

  • Besides Jackie, Jade is the only other character to have appeared in all 95 episodes of the show.
  • Jade coincidentally shares the same surname as her voice actress, Stacie Chan.
  • According to John Rogers, the character of Jade was originally intended to be Captain Black's daughter before the show got permission to make her Jackie's niece.[3]
  • In the episode Bullies, it is shown that Jade has a strong disliking for being called "shrimp" (as former bully Maynard Manson and a Dark Hand agent learned the hard way when she kicked them to the ground). However, when StrikeMaster Ice calls her that in Clash of the Titanics, she doesn't seem to mind (which implies that she had grown out of that trait by then).
  • While they're referred to as "uncle" and "niece," Jackie and Jade are technically cousins, since Jade's father, Shen, is Jackie's (presumably) first cousin, so this would mean that Jackie and Jade are technically first cousins once removed. But in many languages, Chinese included, first cousins once removed call each other aunt/uncle or niece/nephew because there is no other word for this type of relation. It is also common in Asia for children to refer to even non-relative elders as aunt/uncle or big brother/big sister.
  • She and her parents are the only ones to ever question how Uncle is related to them.
  • Her favorite color is blue.
  • There were a few episodes in which Jade actually obeyed Jackie's instruction not to follow him. Most notably in Weight and See, where Jade stayed behind twice.
  • In some episodes, Jade has a red cell phone, which she uses to communicate with Jackie. In Danger in the Deep Freeze, she claims that she is not yet allowed to own a cell phone, despite being shown to possess one in And He Does His Own Stunts, Tale of the Demon Tail and The Return of the Pussycat. This suggests that Danger in the Deep Freeze actually takes place before the events of these three episodes, rather than after them.
  • In Agent Tag, it is revealed that Section 13 classifies Jade as the ultimate security risk.
